It was an emotional and bittersweet farewell as the Ridgefield Police Department bid goodbye to their beloved K9 officer, Zeus, a German Shepherd who had served the force for nine years. In a ceremony that mirrored the respect given to any human officer, Zeus took his final ride in a police vehicle, escorted by a procession of squad cars to the Ridgefield Veterinary Hospital.
A Final Ride As Zeus was wheeled through the crowd of service members who had gathered to pay their respects, an officer fought back tears. He spoke with deep emotion, saying, “It’s with tears in our eyes that we must say goodbye. He wore the Ridgefield police badge with respect, pride, and dignity.”
A Heroic Canine Zeus was much more than a police dog; he was a hero, a true asset to the department. During his career, Zeus assisted with hundreds of arrests and carried out over 50 tracks to find missing individuals or suspects on the run. He played a pivotal role in saving lives, locating six people in life-threatening situations and helping to capture six fleeing criminals. Zeus was truly an “alpha dog,” an essential member of the team.
A Heartbreaking Decision Chief John Roche, deeply moved by the moment, shared his thoughts on Zeus’s final moments. “The disease that had racked him had deteriorated him to such a point where it was just so difficult for him to exist and continue on,” he said, explaining how the decision to say goodbye, though painful, was necessary to prevent further suffering. Zeus had been battling a severe degenerative hip disorder, and his health declined rapidly after his retirement from active duty.
Never Forgotten While Zeus has left this world, he will never be forgotten. The Ridgefield Police Department posted a heartfelt message on Facebook, reflecting on the K9’s remarkable achievements and expressing their ongoing love and admiration for their loyal companion. “Zeus was a valued member of our team as well as our community. He will always remain in our thoughts and never be forgotten.”
A Life Well Lived Zeus’s life was one of service, loyalty, and dedication. He spent his days serving his community and the police department with pride. Not every dog gets the chance to serve in such an important role, and it’s clear that Zeus loved his work. Though his passing is deeply saddening, his legacy as a hero will live on forever.
