Usha Vance, wife of Vice President JD Vance, is traveling to Greenland this week — but she may face an icy welcome

Tensions over Greenland’s future are rising. Usha Vance, wife of U.S. Vice President JD Vance, is visiting Greenland this week to attend the national dogsled race and celebrate Greenlandic culture. However, this trip has angered Greenland’s Prime Minister, Múte B. Egede, who views it as an aggressive U.S. move.

JD Vance, in a recent Fox News interview, supported Donald Trump’s desire to take control of Greenland, questioning Denmark’s governance and suggesting the U.S. might need more territorial influence there for national security reasons. Greenland’s strategic location is vital for U.S. military operations, including its Pituffik Air Base.

The visit by Usha Vance and National Security Adviser Mike Waltz is seen by many as a step toward a more assertive U.S. stance. Egede criticized the presence of U.S. officials, fearing it could intensify American pressure on Greenland’s sovereignty. This visit follows Donald Trump Jr.’s trip to Greenland in January, fueling speculation about U.S. ambitions for the Arctic territory. The question remains: is this diplomacy or the start of something more aggressive?
